Health Administrative Simplification Coalition - HASC

Description:
Formed in 2005 by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) to reduce the cost and complexity of administration in the healthcare industry. A quarter of what is spent in health care annually is on administration resulting in billions being wasted. Their mission is to reduce unnecessary costs as a whole by promoting research and ideas that can be implemented ways that promote administrative simplification. The fact that so many billions of dollars are going to something that is not even patient-centered shows how inefficient the healthcare system is. In a report the HASC released earlier this year they estimated that reducing administrative costs by ten percent over ten years could save as much as $500 billion. The HASC wants information technology to be put into the forefront as a key way to save time and reduce mishap redundancies. Multiple organizations who's goal is to reduce the frustration of administration all see the acceleration HIT adoption by providers and health plans as key to the future of improving the healthcare system.

Applications:
The HASC released outlines for physician practices, hospitals, insurance payers, benefits managers and others to implement to help achieve the coalition's goals:
  • Credentialing physicians and other clinicians
  • Determining and verifying patient eligible for health insurance
  • Standardizing healthcare patient identification cards
  • Improving coordination of authorization processes of radiology and pharmacy services
