American Public Health Association

Based in Washington D.C. - the American Public Health Association (APHA) is a group for public health professionals in the United States. Founded in 1872 by Dr. Stephen Smith, the association now has more than 30,000 members worldwide. The Association defines itself as being "the oldest, largest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world." The mission of the group states that "The association works to protect all Americans and their communities from preventable, serious health threats." APHA represents a broad array of health officials, educators, environmentalists, policy-makers and health providers at all levels working both within and outside governmental organizations and educational institutions.


The American Public Health Association is the oldest, largest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world and has been working to improve public health. The Association aims to protect all Americans and their communities from preventable, serious health threats and strives to assure community-based health promotion and disease prevention activities and preventive health services are universally accessible in the United States. APHA represents a broad array of health professionals and others who care about their own health and the health of their communities. APHA builds a collective voice for public health, working to ensure access to health care, protect funding for core public health services and eliminate health disparities, among a myriad of other issues. Through its two flagship publications, the peer-reviewed American Journal of Public Health and the Nation's Health newspaper, the Association communicates the latest public health science and practice to members, opinion leaders and the public. APHA chooses to make key reports and information available in the spirit of transparency and disclosure.


Applications:

APHA is a partner in the Campgain for Children's Health Care, which was organized to increase awareness about uninsured children in the United States, a growing social problem.
