Anemia is disorder of the blood. It occurs when your body does not produce enough red blood cells or hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the greatest part of red blood cells and binds oxygen. So when you are lacking hemoglobin your blood isn't getting the oxygen it needs to work properly which can lead to fatigue. The most common form of anemia is Iron-deficency. It is the most common blood disease in the United states and affects roughly about 3.2 million people. Women and people with chronic diseases are at greatest risk for this disease. Older adult are also prone to anemia if they have poor diet or medical conditions.

There are a few different causes for anemia
  • excessive bleeding over a long period of time
    • This occurs from ulcers and cancers
    • use of aspirin, ibuprofen
    • menstration and childbirth in women
  • decrease red blood cell production
    • occurs when the body didn't originally produce enough red blood cells
    • causes sickle cell anemia
    • Iron-deficiency anemia
    • bone-marrow and stem cell problems
  • anemia associated with other conditions
    • advanced kidney disease
    • hypothyroidism

Anemia is associated with health informatics because sometimes you have inherited this disease or you get it at an early age and you have to write it on all your medical records. With an EHR it makes it a lot easier because it's already in your final and every doctor that treats you know you have anemia.
