CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention serves as a national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control...to improve the health of the people of the United States."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a sub branch of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It was founded on July 1, 1946 in Atlanta, Georgia and was primarily focused on slowing the spread of malaria mainly through the control of the mosquito populations. Today, the CDC is dedicated to providing information and solutions to the public about the introduction of new and infectious diseases, environmental health risks, physical conditions and general health issues, as well as monitoring the spread and changes of disease around the world, especially in the Unites States. The CDC records massive amounts of data each year with the goal of tracking, fighting and preventing infectious diseases, as well as predicting when and where a likely outbreak may occur. They do this by analyzing the large amounts of information they have accumulated and by informing people and taking direct actions. For instance, when outbreaks occur the CDC will attempt to contain it or at the least track down the cause as well as informing the public how to slow its spread. The CDC is also involved in several programs that train and inform employees how to stay safe and healthy in the workforce.
What the CDC considers essential strategies in achieving its goal:
- Spread the CDC's knowledge and expertise around the world to improve health care for all people.
- Perform and make available constant new research in order to promote public health.
- Developing and applying disease control strategies throughout the US and the world.
- Promoting healthly living and setting up health educational activities for the public.
- Play to people's wants in the marketplace to provide them with what they need to be healthy.
- Use the CDC's power and knowledge to improve the healthcare system.
- Live up to the expectations of the American public by using this resources of the CDC to promote as much positive growth in the health of the population as possible.
The applications of what the CDC does are numerous. Tracking the evolution and spread of an illness or disease better enable us to combat it. The information the CDC collects and provides helps the public better protect themselves from sickness. The CDC can mine its data to get more knowledge on who diseases are affecting more and focus on those affected or susceptible to it. The work the CDC does may further protects us by giving us a chance at eliminating some easily preventable diseases. The knowledge the CDC provides can aid travelers immensely by giving them knowledge of common problems around the world and how to protect them from those illnesses to stay safe and healthy while traveling. The CDC makes it very easy to go online and look up what health risks exist in a region you might be traveling to and prepare for them.
