New Term: Diabetes Mellitus:
Diabetes Mellitus or diabetes for short is a disease where the body has high blood sugar for extended periods of times. Because of this increase in blood sugar the body will want to urinate, eat and drink more than usual. The cause of diabetes is either that there isn’t enough insulin being produced or the body is not using it correctly.
There are several different types of diabetes. Type 1 also known as Juvenile Diabetes happens when the body is simply not producing enough insulin. Type 2 or Adult onset Diabetes happens when the body doesn’t properly respond the insulin that is naturally being produced. Type 2 diabetes can easily be avoided with proper diet, and exercise. The final form of diabetes is Gestational Diabetes this form happens only with pregnant women who develop high blood sugar.
Diabetes affects 382 million people globally and almost 90% of these cases are type 2 and can therefore be prevented. With the help of EHR systems physicians could quickly recognize when their patients are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes and would hopefully be able to prevent some of these cases. According to the American Diabetes Association 245 billion dollars was spend treating diabetes in the U.S. in 2012. Even if physicians with the help of EHR system reduce the number of cases by 10% that would save taxpayers over 24 billion dollars.
