Problem Statement:
It is important for patients to keep track of their health in an accurate manner. Prescriptions, physical therapy, follow-up appointments, and other sensitive aspects of treatment are often tracked with appointment slips or by memory. This can lead to a great deal of confusion if a patient isn't able to keep track of where they're supposed to be or what they're supposed to be doing. Providers are limited in their ability to give details via telephone or face-to-face appointments. They also require a utility to keep their patients informed about their progress. A health care timeline is able to fix the issues that are experienced by the patient and the provider.

Potential Solutions:
  1. Web portal that allows provider and patient input.
  2. Mobile device tethering to a web portal.
  3. Used a card-based scheme.

Solution Feasibility:

Solution 1

  • A web portal offers a great deal of convenience.
  • The patient and provider will be able to interact from any part of the world.
  • A device that has access to the Internet will be able to act as a remote health information terminal.
  • A web portal has the capability of working with mobile devices.
  • The security for the interface can be held with whoever is providing it for the provider.

Solution 2

  • Mobile devices can be integrated with approved vital monitors.
  • Mobile devices can keep track of exercise.
  • If a user is off the grid completely, the mobile device can record data and upload it at a later time to a universal timeline.
  • This probably works better in tandem with a web portal.

Solution 3

  • A data card can keep track of a patient’s treatment.
  • The use of a card can allow for data to be tracked remotely and uploaded later.
  • It’s a far fetch, but encrypted cards could be used as a form of electronic authorization for providers. This can be useful for prescriptions.
  • Allowing the card to be used for appointments, etc. will result in automatic updates to a patient’s timeline.
  • Reduced need for manual input, emphasis on automation.

Chosen Approach

With the advancement of technology and people being able find some way to connect to the internet the next step in patient information could be some kind of data card given to patients to help them keep track of their information from recent visits. The card would primarily be used to provide a timeline for patients who recently had a surgery or serious health problem and want to keep up with their recovery timeline and provide a progress report that doctors can interact, respond and make adjustments based on the status of the user.

Similar to athletics, after an injury the card:
· will keep a day to day status (w/ questionnaires)
· provide a timeline of when patient should recover or stage of improvement
· list activities to aid in recovery from physician or therapist
· alert doctor of setback and schedule a personal follow up

  • 11/12/2012: Review feedback (if available) for the project from the instructor.
  • 11/15/2012: First checkpoint for the project’s finalization.
  • 11/20/2012: Second checkpoint for the project’s finalization.
  • 11/20/2012-11/25/2012: Make any last changes for the project before the submission is completed.
