Term: Imaging, Robotics, & Virtual Reality - IRV

Description:

The use of imaging, robotics, and virtual reality is fast becoming an important part of the IT in healthcare industry. With the rise of technology and its integration with health care, beneficial technology has arisen to help patients, doctors, and health facilities to better meet everyones needs. This ranges from MRI equipment to x-rays, and 3-D visualization of body structures. In robot pharmacies, robotic equipment can fill prescriptions according to what is entered into the system. Once a prescription is entered into a pharmacy computer system, the robotic arm of the pharmaceutical equipment determines the correct size vial, then finds the specified drug. Using bar code scanning, it verifies the location of the drug. The robotic arm holds the vial and counts the pills as they are automatically dropped into the vial. The arm then places the vial on a short conveyer belt and the patient label is applied, complete with medication warning labels. This process greatly reduces the current procedure of filling each prescription by hand.

Medical Robotics in the real world:
Da Vinci SI HD surgical system
This device allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgeries through superior visualization, enhanced dexterity, greater precision, and ergonomic comfort.

Hybrid Assistive Limb 5 (HAL)
An artificially powered "exoskeleton" that enables the wearer to lift weight that is not normally possible. For example it is used in therapy to help people in accidents to walk "unaided".

Simroid
This robot is used in medical schools for students to practice on. These robots come in a variety of specifications, from pregnant women to elderly needing surgery to patients needing dental work. What is most advanced about the robots is the ability to "feel" pain. Simroid is also able to respond to commands and react to certain situations appropriately.
