Definition: Mammaprint is a genomic assay that analyzes the activity of genes in early stage breast cancer. The cancer can be hormone receptor positive or negative. Mammaprint examines the activity of 70 genes, and then calculates a high or low risk of recurrence score.
Application: Still in its early stages Mammaprint may be used regularly in the future to make treatment decisions based on recurrence. Risk of recurrence affects physicians’ treatment plans including the use decision on chemotherapy use post surgery. Mammaprint is not currently a part of
National Comprehensive Cancer Center Network (NCCN) or the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) treatment guidelines
. Mammaprint can only be used to evaluate early stage breast cancers.
