Term: Medical Informatics

Description: Medical Informatics is an emerging field within health informatics that uses information technology to benefit the health and human services industry. This industry creates/maintain new ways for hospitals to communicate with each other, while streamlining the interpersonal communication between staff members and patient. Medical Informatics also helps come up with new ways to keep records, such as EMRs, making essential medical information as accessible as possible.

  • Though every industry needs sometime of informatics specialists, they are particularly important in the medical field. The speed and accuracy with which medical information is conveyed can be the difference between life and death. For instance, if a doctor prescribes a common medication that the patient is allergic to, the effects could be devastating. But if the doctor has access to detailed medical records, indicating allergies and medical history, this sort of situation can be avoided.
  • This young and growing field offers many opportunities. As a medical informatics major, you may enjoy the opportunity to enter an industry that is poised to expand rapidly. Healthcare, already the nation's largest industry, is also its fastest-growing. The graduates of today's degree programs in medical informatics will be the pioneers of the field.
  • Medical informatics specialists do within these areas depends entirely on their concentration. Generally, they provide technical support for databases, design new systems, and make purchasing decisions for new equipment. They also evaluate usability, figure out ways to enhance systems, check data for accuracy, and train staff members to access the database
  • Trainees in medical informatics have professional degrees in a health related area or informatics technologies.

The professional home for biomedical and health informatics is AMIA. They are dedicated "to promoting the effective organization, analysis, management, and use of information in health care in support of patient care, public health, teaching, research, administration, and related policy." AMIA has a large membership of more than 4,000 members they help advance the use of health information and communications technology in alot of areas like personal health management, translational science, clinical care and clinical research, public health/population. With this in mind the goal is improving health. AMIA is has been operating for over 30 years. There college is American College of Medical Informatics they do all kinds of things like sponsored meetings and education. The AMIA has be asked by the federal government before for information because of their unbaised opinons and policy issues.

The inclusion of informatics in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 has given informatics a new prominence in the United States as the backbone of knowledge-driven health care. AMIA members support an array of ARRA grant projects in informatics, including:

  • DNA sequencing analysis (to better understand mutations)
  • disease and health,
  • electronic health records.

As the voice of the nation’s top biomedical and health informatics professionals, AMIA members play a leading role in:

    • moving basic research findings from bench to bedside;
    • evaluating interventions across communities;
    • assessing the impact of health innovations on health policy; and
    • advancing the field of informatics.

With members that include world-class scholars and practitioners, AMIA is leading the way in transforming health care through trusted science, education, and practice of informatics.

There is also the Asia Pacific Association for Medical Informatics The Asia Pacific Association for Medical Informatics is a new and important regional group within the IMIA and it represents an extension of IMIA's global interests in promoting IT health. They are part of APAMI they are comprised of 13 members, nearly all of whom are representing their national health informatics associations. These are Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippine, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Member societies from India, Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka are corresponding members.
