The National Institiutes of Health (also known as NIH) is a compilation of 27 institutes and centers which are known for their efforts in medical research. These organizations support medical research which lead to the improvement of lives and health. NIH is a part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

The mission of the National Institutes of Heath is "science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability." Their research impacts every aspect of family health from child to senior health. The NIH uses this data and research to improve the lives of the people in our world.

The NIH employes over 18,000 employees and invest tens of billions of dollars each year. With over a hundred years of recorded support in national health, the NIH is the leader of leader of supporting and conducting research in the medical field..


These organizations are joined together for the american people's health. They apply their data and research to keep us healthy and make our lives longer. Each of the 27 institutes which make up the NIH have their own specialty for which they conduct research as well as fund research that takes place outside of the institutes themselves. Cancer research at the NIH will next year receive a $6 billion funding boost in a national effort to double the spending on cancer research. Cancer research is the oldest branch of the NIH, with other well known health issues comprising the rest of the institutes' divisions.
