Project HIE STANDARD
A patient portal is a way for patients to communicate with their physicians, doctors, and hospitals online through a website that delivers an application for the patients to work in or view health information. Most patient portals are available for patients at all hours of the day. This way, if something happens to someone anytime of the day, even late, the patient portal is open for the patient to interact with the application to get whatever necessary information to the right people, quickly. These portals co-exist with physician portals so that patient information for the healthcare professional is organized and easily accessible. Examples of patient portal companies include
. Patient Portals also provide support services that help increase what healthcare facilities can do for patients throughout the whole hospital process.
All patient portals offer authentication methods and other security measures that provide safety during login and throughout a session. The patients must authenticate themselves with a username and password before entering the healthcare-related portal for security purposes. This way, any unauthorized user will not have access to health information of someone else without first proving to the application they are who they say they are. Patient portals are a great way to increase the efficiency of health care providers by allowing patients to access medical records, refill prescriptions, pay health-related bills, and more. This will keep patients from waiting in long lines at the hospital when they can simply do it from home. Patient Portals also allow patients register and complete medical forms online which would also help to shorten hospital visits.
