Project Laika is an open source EHR interoperability testing framework that is being developed as a collaborative effort between several organizations interested in the advancement of Health IT and the use of Electronic Health Records and Health Information Exchange (HIE) networks. Laika will verify the input and output of EHR systems against standards and criteria set forth by Certification Commission of Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT).

The software will be used by the CCHIT as a part of its EHR certification program that is scheduled to begin in 2008. Additionally, the purpose of the testing framework is to provide tools for EHR software developers to test their products against the CCHIT standards to ensure certification.

The software is scheduled for its initial release on March 21, 2008.

Project Laika Mission Statement

To create an EHR Interoperability testing framework, under an open source liscensing model, to be used for CCHIT certification testing, and be a testing resource for developers of EHR systems and health information networks.

Project Participants

Project Laika is a collaborative effort between CCHIT, MITRE Corporation, Intergrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The collaboration between CCHIT and MITRE Corporation began in October 2007. Additional project support from IHE and NIST began in January 2008.

Certification Commission of Healthcare Information Technology - CCHIT is a independant, private, non-profit organization that acts as a recognizeed certification body (RCB) for EHRs.
