Robotics Process Automation or RPA is the use of technology that allows software to interpret existing application for processing a transaction, manipulating data, triggering responses and communicating with other digital systems.( Institute for Robotic Process Automation). A new Era of healthcare has begun to emerge that is filled with innovation in which technology is being implemented in nearly every aspect of the industry. RPA is essentially a virtual robot that possess the programming and intelligence to perform certain tasks. This software is very beneficial because it can save time and cut costs by completing certain tasks more efficiently than a human could. However, RPAs are not typically used for large scale or intricate health care procedures, but mainly for the “busy work” or tedious tasks, such as billing and other administrative work.
There are many benefits to RPAs. These include lowering error and freeing up time for clinicians to perform more urgent work. However, there have been many concerns about Robotic Process Automation in that many citizens that enter the job market in today’s world might ordinarily have trained in the field of health IT, but because of all these new technologies, RPAs may make these new technology skills and training obsolete. If a student studied healthcare administration, their potential job may be taken by an RPA. People who work with IT help desks; network support and server supports are competing for jobs with software that cost less and works faster. However, according to Frank Casale from the Institute for Robotic Process Automation, “Almost all of computer-related process which is rules-based which human perform today could be affected at some point in its lifecycle…” New technology has continuously replaced manual labor in the past. Overall Robotic Process Automation has more benefits than challenges. Many jobs in history have been replaced by machinery or technology and there will be many more such changes in the future. The demand for health IT experts have not decreased because innovation in the health care industry may never stop.

Application: Robotic Process Automation has been utilized within many organizations or firms and the possibilities are virtually endless. The software can be adjusted and tailor made for individual firms. It converts the tedious everyday tasks into quick manipulation of data. RPAs have been compared to business process management because of there similarities. A company called Blue Prism not only utilizes RPAs but manufactures RPA software for distribution. Blue Prism makes it possible to “create your own virtual workforce”. It helps other firms or individuals automate applications that could be useful for their particular business. RPA have also made a great impact within medical research. A study done by EB Cogan utilized automated robotics to analyze phosphates within organic and inorganic. The robotics had the ability to analyze the formation of the phosphates and the color sensitivities.The robotics were able to handle the samples efficiently and reduce human labor significantly.
