Description

The Society for Neuroscience is a worldwide health organization that works to help promote better understanding of the brain and the nervous system, which are basically the two most important parts of understanding neurology. They are a nonprofit organization working to enhance neuroscience research in the best ways possible (Society for Neuroscience, 2014). While neuroscience primarily involves the study of the nervous system and brain along with concepts of psychology, the Society for Neuroscience works to combine these methods of research and transform it into information that can be applied towards the field of neurology today (Society for Neuroscience, 2014).

The missions of Society for Neuroscience

The primary goals of the Society for Neuroscience are summed up simply into 4 ways:
(Society for Neuroscience, 2014)

  1. Promote better understanding of the brain and the nervous system by bringing scientists of all backgrounds together.
  2. Provide professional opportunities, activities, and information resources for all neuroscientists.
  3. Give general public knowledge and information as well as general education about the scientific discoveries in neuroscience. Support active discussions on neurological issues relating to conduct and outcomes of neuroscience research.
  4. Inform legislators and policy makers about new scientific knowledge.

Applications

The combination of neuroscience, health informatics, and health IT have evolved throughout the years. With the advancement of online records and publishing, we can use these newly improved methods to overall enhance the research that neurologists have to offer to the world. While specific health scenarios and diseases have had their own placement in the field of health informatics, there may also be new developments that have not yet been released yet will make a significant change. eNeuro is a prime example of this.

eNeuro

eNeuro is a new, open-accessed journal expecting to arrive in November 2014 and will primarily consist of scientific neurology research and innovation in publishing (Christopher Bernard, 2014). This journal idea was established by the Society of Neuroscience, and the goal is to provide a resource journal that is not only online, but also of good quality, broad-based, and peer-reviewed (Christopher Bernard, 2014). This is a huge step in ensuring quality information through the field of neurology because it also focuses solely on neuroscience.

The Society of Neuroscience provides a few reasons as to why publishing in eNeuro is beneficial, including:
(Christopher Bernard, 2014)
  • Commitment to excellent source
  • Broad neuroscience content
  • Fair, fast evaluation by leading scientists
  • A noncommercial publisher
  • Supports Society of Neuroscience programs that serve the field
