Telehealth is the delivery of health-related services and information using telecommunications technologies. Telehealth covers a wide range of situations from a couple of health professionals discussing a case over the telephone to videoconferencing between providers at locations in different countries. It could even get as complex as robotic technology.
This is an expansion of telemedicine. Telemedicine more narrowly focuses on the curative aspect. Telehealth includes preventive and curative aspects. It was originally used to describe administrative or educational functions related to telemedicine. Today, telehealth stresses a wide range of technology solutions.
Telehealth is broadly defined a
s the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration; I believe modern healthcare will soon be propelled into an age where telehealth will serve as an intermediary for patient and practitioner. The lack of deceleration in societies affinity for mobile devices shall serve as an inroads to continue to make strides in the capabilities and utilities telehealth may provide. Increases in transportable medical monitoring and diagnostic devices will increase the mobility of medical practices and in turn increase the need for non-physical means to connect patient to care. Although the initial aversions do seem to hinge the field restraining it to its infancy stage, once proper guidelines and benchmarks are established and some uniformity can be established in the maintenance of optimal health care telehealth will produce an entirely new feel and functionality for healthcare professionals and patients.
