Trans cranial Doppler is a health technology diagnostic and monitoring tool using ultrasound technique to access cerebral blood flow (CBF) or velocity in the brain using computerized sound waves-shapes and pitch and images. Medical professional use these images for diagnostic, surgical and preventive techniques. This method is low cost, and the least intrusive and safe for all populations from infants to aging adults. It is a convenient way to monitor patients due to its portability for bedside monitoring. It can be used inpatient and in outpatient settings as well.
In the area of Health Information Technology, TCD is a neuroscience tool that utilizes Doppler data to diagnosis, predict and treat neurological or cognitive functioning. Trans cranial Doppler is the method of choice for evaluation of stokes or cerebrovascular diseases such as carotid, cerebral emboli, head trauma, arteriovenous malformations stenosis/occlusion (Topcuoglu 2012).
TCD is also increasing in research and prediction application in diseases such as dementia, sickle cell, Alzheimer and Parkinson and assessing brain death. A major health information technology tool that is used with TCD is dopOSCCI. This software tool processes and records the trans cranial Doppler data and gives statistical reports, visual data graphs and individualized reports in a file such as Excel (Badcock et al 2012). This analysis tool has enhanced the TCD results and includes not only individual results but can store information for comprehensive group and behavioral summaries.
Another application of TCD is in BCI, Brain-computer interfaces. BCI technology aids individuals who have cognitive abilities but severe mobile and non-verbal disabilities to communicate through TCD monitoring signals (Myrden et al 2011). TCD technology technique provides a non-invasive and portable way to produce cognitive and sensory signals for future language rehabilitation for neurological disorders.
