Problem statement

Taxpayers pay approximately a whopping $2.5 trillion annually for healthcare in the United States. A significant amount of this questionable

epidemic is due to overpriced procedures and, worst of all, procedures that are not even needed. Without even being aware, a patient could

spend several thousand dollars in just one doctor’s visit. Hidden fees bundled up in extra sets of x-rays when one would suffice, pointless

stress tests for perfectly healthy people, or certain questionable prescription medications are just some of the reasons as to why the U.S. is

in the predicament that they are in, for they are in the leading of the OCED(Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) with

the highest amount of money spent on health care. While many of the health care expenses are imperative and quite obviously unavoidable,

many are.A simple way to decrease this epidemic is with the help of ‘What Is My Diagnosis’. This website will give insightful information

about patients via innovative features, such as virtual medical seminars, picture sharing and skype, thus, patients will be a few steps closer to

decreasing their medical expenses.

Potential solutions

'What Is My Diagnosis' would be a platform where people could meet with medical students and professionals to eliminate time and effort spent in clinics and hospitals. This platform would exercise features and solutions such as:

  1. An online platform where medical students and professionals can reach people on a mass web based level.

  2. Online diagnosis.

  3. Online education for possible home treatment.

  4. Anonymity of users.

  5. Video consulting online

  6. Fee for service

Feasibility of each solution
  1. An online platform of medical students and professionals - The site will consist of nursing and medical students (before their residency) answering questions. The nurse or medical student will be assigned one anonymous patient.
  2. Online diagnosis- The patients will provide a list of symptoms they are experiencing to the nurse (similar to how JustAnswer.com works) under an anonymous profile.
  3. Online education for possible home treatment - The site will provide links to online resources to help users better understand their ailments and how to take care of themselves if possible. The participating nurses and doctors may be able to make videos demonstrating, for instance, how to give your mother an insulin injection and what to look out for with this process.
  4. Anonymity of users - People may not want to share their personal ailments with the entire world. This platform will provide users with the option to make an online avatar to protect their privacy. The avatar will allow the users to build a profile based on their ailments and medical history.
  5. Video consulting online - To cut down on the amount of unnecessary doctor’s office visits, people may schedule online video consulting with the medical students and professionals to get diagnosed, recommendations and second opinions. We would have to think of ways that we may still protect the anonymity and privacy of the users.
  6. Fee for service - A low fee will be charged. The fee will range from $15 - $25. The fee will pay for the medical/nursing students, and for maintenance of the site.
