Breast Cancer

Description
After skin cancer breast cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in women. It is caused by a lump found in the tissues of the breast. There are many different forms of breast cancer. Some forms of breast cancer stay within the breast and only affect the lymph nodes and tissues, while others spread rapidly through the blood stream. Although most forms of breast cancer are malignant (dangerous), there are forms that are benign(not dangerous). The only way to distinguish between the two is by getting a mammogram. Women should have a yearly examination because of how prevalent breast cancer is. Once diagnosed it can be treated in different ways depending on what stage you're in. Most women undergo surgery and also receive additional treatment such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy and radiation. They say that every 1 in 8 women that have lived to age 90 have experienced breast cancer. Two thirds of the women effected by breast cancer are over the age of 50 and about 1 in every 3 people knows someone effected by breast cancer. It is a disease that is effecting people in our every day lives.

Application
Breast cancer has to do with the field of health informatics because in order to treat this kind of cancer you have to go through insurance. The physicians and patients have to deal with the insurance companies to have them cover the costs of their chemo or whatever treatment they are looking into having. Cancer isn't cheap and some families are financially hit hard when it comes to this.
