Term: Neural Networks
Neural network typically refers to a network or circuitry of biological neurons connecting to other neurons via nodes. In Health Informatics however, neural can a new definition which departs from the original. Neural networks in IT are interconnected groups of artificial neurons that use a mathematical model for information processing. Systems based on this model are primarily used for non-linear statistical data modeling and decision making tools. These systems also can be invaluable to data mining in vast amounts of information because of its rapid computational rates. Fascinatingly, neural network based systems can find complex relationships between input and output and even patterns.

  • Vehicle control, process control
  • Game-playing and decision making (backgammon, chess)
  • Pattern recognition (radar systems, face identification, object recognition, etc.)
  • Sequence recognition (gesture, speech, handwritten text recognition)
  • Medical diagnosis

  • Data mining (or knowledge discovery in databases, "KDD")
  • Visualization and e-mail spam filtering

Artificial intelligence and cognitive modeling try to simulate some properties of neural networks. While similar in their techniques, the former has the aim of solving particular tasks, while the latter aims to build mathematical models of biological neural systems.

In the artificial intelligence field, artificial neural networks have been applied successfully to speech recognition, image analysis and adaptive control, in order to construct software agents (in computer and video games or autonomous robots. Most of the currently employed artificial neural networks for artificial intelligence are based on statistical estimation, optimization and control theory."

Neural networks are on the bleeding edge of health technology where they can assist doctors with answer to a decision based question. Also due to neural networks immense capabilities for data mining, new correlations between the cause and treatments can be inferred through the data.
